Just to let everyone know who reads this community, we've decided that we're going to spend this quarter mostly just getting ready for tap club ... rather than trying to start it off this quarter, especially with Chris and my heavy schedules.
Meanwhile .. keep getting the word out about tap club, so hopefully we'll have tons of people who will come whenever we start it - which hopefully will be winter quarter.
And any other people willing to help teach .. let us know. Wouldn't hurt to have 1 or 2 more people to help teach/lead next quarter
Hope all your classes are going well so far :)

Hello from the other side
Hi all. I'm Matt, the president of Swing Kids, Western's Swing Dance club. I thought that since our respective arts have so much history in common, I would post here to
a) Introduce myself and somewhat shamelessly plug my club, which has such enormous respect for tap dancers,
b) Suggest the possibility of collaborating sometime(s) during the upcoming year,
and c) Post this clip
of the amazingly talented 19-year-old Joseph Wiggan, whom I had the pleasure to meet this summer (actually, at the event shown here), for your viewing enjoyment.
Anyways, good luck with your club this year, and I hope to see you around the school.

Hey, guys. I know our attempt at getting this club together was pretty much a failure. But it's not too late to get it going, you know. Would you guys be interested in actually getting stuff together this year? I don't know what my schedule will be like so I can't make any promises, but, provided I have time, I would be interested in and willing to try to give some lessons to the novices of the group. I don't know if we'd ever get to the point where we could actually choreograph and learn some dances and do some performances, but if nothing else, we can at least learn some more steps and combinations and grow as dancers a little bit. Would you guys be into this? Like I said, I can't promise my availability here, but if it tuens out I can
do this, are you interested? Let me know.

If someone wouldn't mind stepping up and planning this first meeting .. a good mixture of nerves, stress, and a bunch of things going on in my life has kept me from finally getting it started. Let me know what you need to know and I'll help you out. It'd be best if it were held in one of the PAC rooms i mentioned earlier .. especially since the FX Main Lounge, as suggested at one time, not only has a floor that might be a bit too slippery to dance on, but there's also quite a bit of traffic through that area. Also, Thursday evenings have been the time that most people have thought would be best, Friday evenings being the second best time ..
Also, I forgot exactly who was the Budget person... but he/she needs to go to a Budget training-ish meeting in the VU one of these Thursdays at noon.. and ASAP too, because otherwise the club will be considered inactive. (I can forward the e-mail i received about it to you once i know who it is) If you can't go on thursdays, let me know so we can try to get someone else who is free at noon on thursdays just so we remain "active"

what's going on with this tap club? let's figure something out, cause i'd really like to get back in it!
Monday, February 7th, 2005
So...it's been a couple of weeks since we last tried to meet...
Is it necessary to meet in a place that we have to reserve? Could we possibly meet somewhere that almost everyone knows where it is such as Fairhaven Admin Lounge? The floor there is nice and shiny...I wonder if it would be good for tapping? I noticed a dance team or something like that was using the space to rehearse some moves...
just an idea...

I really hate to do this, but apparently my request was never looked at, and someone else ended up taking the time slot.. as well as Friday's time slot that I had as a backup if Thursday didn't work as well. Hence, the tap club meeting today is cancelled. I will most likely still go over to the VU at 5:10ish to meet people for dinner since not everyone will know about the cancellation, and this will still give us a chance to get to know each other a bit more and such.
I'll post more either Friday or early this weekend. Plan on there being a meeting next Thursday at this same time .. I'm going to take more steps to make sure i can get that slot this time. Again, sorry it had to get cancelled.. we'll get this going eventually Current Mood: frustrated

I just realized that I never went back to check to see if my request to use room 399 tomorrow from 6-7 for our first tap club meeting was accepted or not (my request for the room the week before was rejected because it was already booked .. even though it didn't say so on the schedule). Hence, there is a slight possibility that we'd have to cancel the meeting tomorrow. I'm over in the PAC building for class tomorrow morning, so I will check it out first thing in the morning. *crosses fingers* hopefully it got accepted .. gah, this would be quite the disaster.

First Meeting of Tap Club
(cross posted to the WWU community)
This Thursday, from 6-7pm, will be the first "meeting" of the Tap Club. Absolutely anyone is invited to come, regardless of experience, and whether or not you have tap shoes! All that is needed is an interest in wanting to tap :)
For those who would like to, right now at least some of us are planning on meeting outside the VU somewhere around 5:05/5:10ish to eat dinner together and then head over to the PAC room at about 5:40ish. If you do decide to show up for dinner there, just look for a group of people standing around.. hopefully we'll be able to find each other.
To sum it up:
--> This Thursday
[5:10pm in front of the VU if you want to sit with other tap club people for dinner]
--> PAC 399
(up one level from where you enter the performing arts center)
What do you need to bring?
-- Tap shoes, if you have them (obviously :))
(if you don't have tap shoes, you can still dance semi-well in your socks .. not sure how clean the floor is, so bring socks you don't mind getting a little dirty if you are going to dance in them)
-- If you want, a waterbottle. There is a water fountain in the room though, so it's not really necesary.
-- Any music you think might be good to tap to (I'm going to work on making several CDs full of just songs we can tap to)
What do you need to wear?
-- It's up to you, but I'd suggest socks (of course), a non-long sleeved shirt (simply because it's going to get warm in there .. there's not much air conditioning nor windows), and any shorts/pants that you can move around in alright (aka please no skirts/dresses ... and anything too tight-fitting can be difficult to move in unless they are the dance-kind of pants)
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to respond here, in the WWU Tap journal, or via e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org . Thanks .. and hope to see some people there on Thursday! Current Mood: excited
First Tap Meeting (tenative)
I have us signed up to use room 399 in the PAC for both Thursday and Friday this week, though I'm planning to have the first "meeting"/"practice" happen on Thursday. The one problem is that the meeting would have to be from 6pm-7pm, as the other times were taken up. If we end up doing it Friday, I have the room signed up for from about 7:30 to 8:30pm .. and there wasn't anyone else around that time .. so that time is a bit more flexible.
If we do the meeting Thursday, as I'm thinking is probably best, then I was thinking that for those who wanted, we would meet outside the VU at 5:10ish and go to dinner together, maybe decide what exactly we'll do, and then from there (hopefully finishing 5:30/5:40ish and giving our stomachs some time to rest) head over to PAC 399.
Before we get into any more specifics though, we need to decide if Thursday will be a good meeting day. I'm hoping that by tomorrow evening a couple people will have responded to this, and if its sounding like a plan, I'll post an entry on the WWU journal (as well as on here, and send out an e-mail to everyone on the mailing list i have going) to promote the tap meeting one last time before it happens.
(hehe, it sort of helps to post this in the wwu tap journal, and not in my own *sigh*)

YAY FOR TAP!!!
I finally got my tap shoes from home and I'm rusty, but after I warm up, I'm a little better...now that I'm ready, what's the latest?
Wednesday, November 10th, 2004
Sorry it's been so long since I last updated, but I've been pretty busy and wasn't able to get much of anything done last week that had to do with tap club :/
Earlier this afternoon though, I stopped down at the AS Club area in the VU and turned in the registration form for the Tap Club, (with that name, since we hadn't decided on one) so next Monday I'll be attending a meeting down there in the afternoon, and very possibly we'll be an official club either on Monday or very soon after :)
As for our next meeting - when do you all think the best time to meet would be? We're going to want to probably aim for sometime next week... and from what we talked about at the first meeting, maybe Friday evening? I can look sometime this week into reserving one of the two rooms for us to go and tap on .. right now just as one group since we don't have enough to split into seperate levels. I've made one mix of at least somewhat-good songs to tap to (in general), and might be able to get another handful onto another CD by next week so we'd have plenty of music to tap to
any comments or questions .. let me know :)

We need a name!
I'm going to go by and see if I can set up an appointment for sometime this week down at the AS center place, but this means that within the next few days - we must come up with a name! We could just go with "Tap Club", but there have got to be tons of puns or something like that .. that would sounds a lot better. Remember we should
(though don't have to) keep it relating to tap in some way.
It was posted a while back too .. but if you have songs that you think would be good for tap dancing too - both performance, and for just the weekly meetings (and such) .. leave a note in here or e-mail it to email@example.com with a list of songs (w/the band/group name), I'll try to get them downloaded (I've found a possible song for a group number .. probably the advanced group .. while looking last night for some good songs to use each week) Current Mood: good

*** Please read if you were not at Friday's information meeting
In order to start a "mailing list", and in order to make it 10 times easier to let everyone know about upcoming events, and to be able to contact people ... if you were not at Friday's meeting, please send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org (or reply to this entry) with:
- Your name (first & last)
- Your extension and/or phone/cell phone number
- Your e-mail (that you would prefer to be used to have things sent to related to the tap club)
- Your experience level (# of years you've tap danced .. and any other info if it helps)
Eventually I hope to have created a document with a list of everyone's information, and will send it out to everyone whose e-mail addresses I have in that document. As more people join I'll send out updated lists every so often.
For those who were unable to attend our first meeting Friday afternoon, here's a summary of what all we went over & figured out:( Friday's Informational MeetingCollapse )
Two other pieces of information:
1) We need to come up with a name as soon as possible. I'm hoping to take the paperwork for the AS Club registration in early this week, and set up an appointment with someone down there (one of the parts to getting us registered)... and it would be nice to have this all done by the end of next week so we could start "advertising" as soon as possible
2) I've set up a WWU Tap e-mail address - email@example.com - so from now on, any questions that have to do with the tap club should preferably be sent to that e-mail address. (use that address on the WWU journal if people have questions and/or want contact info)
Our next meeting might
be next week, but at this time there's no official date/time set. For now - just try to get the word out to as many people as possible.
Any questions/comments, etc... just reply and let me know!

*** First Meeting
at about 4:00pm
will be the first meeting - just to figure out what times would work for everyone, and what days, etc... as well as get all the paperwork figured out.
I'm figuring we'll just meet down at the base of the spiral stairs in the library -- right by where you would walk by if you were walking from Red Square to the PAC. I'd say it'd be no longer than 30-40 minutes ... depending what all we decide to figure out and all that jazz
I'll probably go and e-mail / comment this to anyone that expressed interest over in the WWU journal or is part of the community ... but please let anyone else you know that tap dances or has interest in tap dancing -- have them come at least to this first meeting. We need at least 5 of us there, but it'd be great to have tons more :) Current Mood: sleepy

How would this Friday at about 4:00pm work for just all of us meeting and starting to figure things out? The other possibilities would be tomorrow (Monday) at maybe 3/3:30ish, Wednesday/Thursday morning, or one of the evenings (we could always all meet for dinner or something).
If we do it later in the week .. I might try to print something out and post it around .. cause I'm sure that there are more than just 4-5 people that would be interested in it :)

Good time to meet?
I've been down to the Performing Arts Center place a bunch of more times (trying to figure out scheduling and all), and have been there tapping once more since I last posted (in room 199 .. which has more of a performing center kind of floor, rather than a wood floor, though it worked just as well if not better)
Today I also picked up the club registration packet from the AS place in the VU. So I'm just wondering when everyone here is able to meet (such as in the next week.. either this weekend, maybe sometime during the week or next weekend). We need at least 5 people (4 more aside from myself) to be in the club (and sign the papers), so at least at this first "informational" kind of meeting we'd need to get at least 5 of us there so we can take care of this! All we'd do is probably finish filling out this registration packet, maybe try to decide on the first couple "meetings", stuff like that... i don't think it'd take much longer than 30-45 minutes (we could even go check out the rooms that we'd be using .. if you haven't seen them already -- 399 and 199 in the PAC)
Considering there are only 6 people in this community ... make sure to tell anyone else you know that taps/wants to tap, etc... about the meeting once we get a time/day set!
sooo .. times/dates over the next week you're free or could be free just for a short period of time?
Monday, September 20th, 2004
I went and talked to the theatre arts guy today, and also looked at the room (PAC 399) that we would be using. The sign-up sheets to use the room aren't out yet.. and apparently those are to sign up the week of. yeah, still haven't figured it all out yet *sigh*
The room though looks nice (though not as nice as the studio's anyone has gone to) - wood floor, great size (plenty of room to move around in), one wall is pretty much completely covered in mirrors. I talked to the guy about if I would be able to store my boombox over there (since I'm over here on the south side of campus.. haha, don't think i'd want to haul the boombox and tap shoes over there every time), and he said i probably could .. and I'm sure there's an outlet somewhere in the room
i'll e-mail or call and talk to them a bit more about it ... and start up a tapping club .. and then hopefully we can start up in a week or two :)
(haha, i can't wait to take the tap shoes out from underneath this bed and put them on :)) Current Mood: tired
